Left Rite is a crew whose events remain about music first, and it shows in so many ways. Not only do they book dope DJ’s, but all the Left Rite resident DJ’s are heavy in talent. The sound is so important to them that the invested into an amazing sound system. Even the lighting system and high design logo serves as an enhancer to the music, not a distraction. It’s a 100% inclusionary party vibe without virtue signaling. Their dedication to music leaves no room for ego’s, which is truly a  breath of fresh air.

Infared was held at  La Peg this month, a restaurant located in the FringeArts building. As it goes for many crews, Left Rite has struggled with venue space. Before it’s closing, The Irish Pol was home to this party, before there, it was held at Lolie’s. The latter has also since closed down.

La Peg was definitely a neat venue, though the set up was a bit strange for an event like this. The dance floor was just where tables had been cleared out, but it worked. Resident BeeTee Beats started off the night, and played good warm-up tunes. Who’s Who is comprised of DZA and Tommy Hogunz, two well- rounded people in the scene, and they followed suit after BeeTee Beats. I didn’t get a ton of dancing for the first half of the night. It was really great being able to catch up with friends and meet some new ones, so I had to relish in that for a bit. The headliner of the night was Joe Pompeo. Oh fuuuu he was so good. His set was really wild and diverse and moved seamlessly. It was the hardest dancing I have done in awhile. I briefly spoke to him after his set, and his energy was so good. 10/10 night for sure.

Over the past two years, Left Rite has continually booked the best DJ’s for Infrared. The last Infrared party ever will be next month with all residents. Their party, Friday Night Jawn, will still happen monthly and they will be focusing on mostly one-off’s for now. Philly fam I implore you to book these guys or have them provide sound reinforcement for yr parties. Left Rite, never stop. <333

Hoo boy, I’m turning 30 at the end of this month. In honor of this, I am raising $300 for WOAR (Women Organized Against Rape). The members at WOAR have a program called Safe Bars, a program that trains bar and venue staff to stand up to sexual assault. This is such a crucial program and, if you can, please consider donating to this awesome cause. No donation is too small. Thank you!

Soft Leather Philadelphia 5.24.17

To touch upon the controversy surrounding a high amount of people being drugged at The Dolphin, I will say this. The Dolphin did have a large percentage of these incidents, but they are not the only club where this happens. No venue is immune from rape culture/crappy people, but the staff at The Dolphin have clearly made changes to combat nonconsensual club drugging.

The bar has been moved against the wall rather than being placed in the middle of the space with all sides open. This not only optimizes space but leaves less room for shenanigans. The community water is gone and the bartenders were as attentive as always.  I applaud The Dolphin staff for doing what their part in creating a safer space.

Soft Leather is a techno/fetish night. I have never been to an event quite like this before, but I had a few expectations. What I was not expecting was how insane Wassup Gina is as a DJ. I have a few female DJ’s who are held close to my heart and Wassup Gina is on my list now. I was expecting Genitorturers type music (which I personally always found a bit cheesy) but naah. The music was hard hitting and high-end techno. Big ups to Sweat Daddy too. Both DJ’s did not skip a beat with the energy they were bringing.

The night started off unusually slow but Philly usually starts partying late. I left a little after midnight when it was getting crowded. The weather has been dreary and this was a party for a niche group, so I think that was a factor to a slow start. That did not stop the DJ’s from playing bangers, and the few people who were on the dance floor were tearing it up.

Even when the club did start filling up, the crowd remained considerate of other people and their space. The event had a disclaimer about respecting one another, and disclaimers like this that get posted on event pages are an easy way to promulgate the type of party you want. Soft Leather did a great job in facilitating a consensual and open-minded party. While I have had some pretty lamentable experiences with crowds at certain parties at The Dolphin before, Soft Leather was a breath of fresh air and I hope this party comes back to Philly soon.
