The police are not making “Kensington great again”

America has a plethora of problems.

Healthcare is in crisis, education is teetering, and we are beginning to experience that late-stage capitalism. Not all of us see eye to eye on everything, but a lot of people find camaraderie when police corruption is discussed. The recent incident here in Philly of the racist Starbucks manager calling the cops on two black men was not surprising to anyone. Cops killing unarmed people of color, children even, is tragically unsurprising.  Nor is it a shock to hear of cops victim blaming sexual assault victims. The incident I am about to relay is absolutely not as dire as systemic racism and innocent deaths that happen so frequently by the hands of cops. It is, however, a story that needs to be told.

Dark Tower V3: Ooh Baby I Like It Raw! was a party bearing many amazing facets. There were multiple rooms and floors with different genres of music and handcrafted decor. A coat check was available, and water and soda were being sold on the cheap. This was a BYOB event and the organizers involved created a safe and inclusive atmosphere.  DanceSafe, a crucial organization in the nightlife, was present upstairs. Dark Tower had something for everyone and was an event that brought the community together in a truly positive way.

My friends and I got there after 11, maybe closer to 12. We checked out The Jungle with Camp Phuck It and Techno Basement presented by Labyrinth. At one point I went upstairs and saw my friend walk outside with a stern look on his face. I walked back down the basement and told my friend what I saw. Moments later, the lights were on and we were told the party was shut down. Unfortunately, parties getting shut down by the police is nothing new, neither is how the police acted, which was not ideal from what I personally experienced.

One white and blond policewoman was particularly aggressive. It’s no surprise that she acted with a toxic masculine attitude. In an industry where police act with cowboy machismo, women officers have to act like that to gain even an iota of respect from their male co-workers. She made it difficult for people to grab their coats and literally was making fun of people like we were in high school. She was overheard saying “did any of you people look in the mirror before you left the house today?” and said to someone “your shirt is on backward, haha just kidding.”  The organizers told the police that they were not selling liquor and therefore did not have a liquor license. The police said that since they “saw beer being brought in”, they could come in. I am unsure if this was within their rights.

As if people already have so many valid reasons to fear and not respect the police (a true shame because they could serve a great need in this country), adding on bullying and unkind words are just a few more drops into the overflowing pail of police brutality and crookedness.  As the cops drove away that night, one of them was heard chanting “make Kensington great again” over the police car loudspeaker.

While I personally find that harrowing, I was informed that the police worked well with the event organizers. That is hopeful.

If you’re interested in laws, policies, and other issues regarding nightlife check out 24HrPhl. We are a collective working together towards creating the best community that we can.

Saturday In The Park with LEFT RITE

FINALLY we had a nice two days of actual spring, and the heroes of Left Rite jumped on the chance to throw the first park party of the season. It was a fantastic way to kick off the Spring season after the longest winter ever.

Saturday In The Park with LEFT RITE

Saturday was the last day of Mercury being in retrograde and the weather turned out perfect for an outdoor party (considering this awful weather following this weekend. Left Rite provided sound reinforcement and had a slew of their resident DJ’s providing the music. Everyone who played was stellar, of course, but Phil Yeah’s set was especially notable for its weird and spooky minimal beats.

What’s nice about park parties is they provide a chance for nightlife fam and otherwise to get together during the daylight hours. A lot of friends brought their beautiful dogs and children, and someone even brought a majestic boa constrictor (still mad I didn’t get a picture). Gotta love seeing all sorts of crews gathering together and contributing positively to the park atmosphere. In general, park parties seem to bring out the most diverse group of people. Whether you’re on OG burner, a dark techno bb’s, or just looking for something free that the whole family can enjoy, park parties are unique in that they truly are for all types of communities.

The party ended unusually early, understandably so. The Shakedown with Till Von Sein was just one of the many parties happening that night. I made it to exactly zero Saturday night events because day drinking and sun equals an early bedtime for me.

Perhaps we will see the spring weather again soon, and when we do look out for more park parties as well as the return of Fountain Green! Catch ya in the sun, fam.

Next Up: Saturday In The Park with LEFT RITE

Infrared w. Joe Pompeo, Who’s Who, BeeTee Beats

Left Rite is a crew whose events remain about music first, and it shows in so many ways. Not only do they book dope DJ’s, but all the Left Rite resident DJ’s are heavy in talent. The sound is so important to them that the invested into an amazing sound system. Even the lighting system and high design logo serves as an enhancer to the music, not a distraction. It’s a 100% inclusionary party vibe without virtue signaling. Their dedication to music leaves no room for ego’s, which is truly a  breath of fresh air.

Infrared w. Joe Pompeo, Who’s Who, BeeTee Beats

Infared was held at  La Peg this month, a restaurant located in the FringeArts building. As it goes for many crews, Left Rite has struggled with venue space. Before it’s closing, The Irish Pol was home to this party, before there, it was held at Lolie’s. The latter has also since closed down.

La Peg was definitely a neat venue, though the set up was a bit strange for an event like this. The dance floor was just where tables had been cleared out, but it worked. Resident BeeTee Beats started off the night, and played good warm-up tunes. Who’s Who is comprised of DZA and Tommy Hogunz, two well- rounded people in the scene, and they followed suit after BeeTee Beats. I didn’t get a ton of dancing for the first half of the night. It was really great being able to catch up with friends and meet some new ones, so I had to relish in that for a bit. The headliner of the night was Joe Pompeo. Oh fuuuu he was so good. His set was really wild and diverse and moved seamlessly. It was the hardest dancing I have done in awhile. I briefly spoke to him after his set, and his energy was so good. 10/10 night for sure.

Over the past two years, Left Rite has continually booked the best DJ’s for Infrared. The last Infrared party ever will be next month with all residents. Their party, Friday Night Jawn, will still happen monthly and they will be focusing on mostly one-off’s for now. Philly fam I implore you to book these guys or have them provide sound reinforcement for yr parties. Left Rite, never stop. <333

_____________

Hoo boy, I’m turning 30 at the end of this month. In honor of this, I am raising $300 for WOAR (Women Organized Against Rape). The members at WOAR have a program called Safe Bars, a program that trains bar and venue staff to stand up to sexual assault. This is such a crucial program and, if you can, please consider donating to this awesome cause. No donation is too small. Thank you!

Birthday Fundraiser for WOAR Ayyy

Next Up: Wonderlust w/ Mr. Falcon, Aziz, and The Wonder Bars (DJ Set)

Goodie no.93 : 6 Year Anniversary

Goodie is a very dope Philly party crew that does a lot of things right. From the sound to the music, they put on events that remain professional while still laying in the underground. They are an essential part of the community.

This particular event was an insightful one for me.

Goodie no.93 : 6 Year Anniversary

In order to get into the party, you needed to have a special Goodie key card that would be for you and a +1. Going to Goodie was a last minute plan for me, so big ups to fellow party friend Ily for gifting me his access card.

The party started around 11. I got there unusually late for myself. Friends who know me will tell you I’m always the first one at the party. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As far as DIY party spaces go, this one was ideal. Definitely enough room to move around with a decent bathroom situation. Free water was offered. Something I always appreciate is when a crew understands that you don’t have to turn up the music to insane levels. Goodie knows that loudness doesn’t always make for a better or more hype time. The music consistently stayed at a proper volume. Just another testament to the professional vibes of Goodie.

Great space, great music. The crowd was…interesting. When I came in I noticed a disproportionate amount of 20 something white dudes. Not necessarily a problem on its own, diversity rules tho. I wasn’t really feeling some of the leering/”I’m trying to bang” vibes I was picking up on. HOWEVER, I will say that despite my discomfort with all that, I never felt unsafe or at risk. Nobody put their hands on me, and Goodie is a crew that advocates safe spaces and consensual parties.

I quickly found my people though, and I made some great new friends. We talked about some important issues surrounding the community. Specifically party volume level (Goodies excels at this), dancefloor etiquette (this is a thing that I will touch upon in a future post), and how to respect different body types in a space we are all navigating.
The person I talked to about this commented that some places get really crowded, and if you’re of a larger stature, it can get hairy sometimes. It can’t always be helped that you may knock into someone, but being polite is key. As a smaller person, I can also get behind this sentiment as well. It’s ok if I can’t see the DJ or visuals but please let me get through, ya know? The club space is for everyone, no matter what size you are. It’s extremely important to mind your P’s and Q’s when people are moving throughout. Nobody needs a dose of salt if honest mistakes happen like a drink getting spilled or someone trips over you. Thank

Speaking of nightlife topics, 24HrPhl has a great survey up in relation to the nightlife. It’s open for anyone to take, whether you are a patron, DJ, promoter, or whatever your heart desires. It’s fun and only took me a few minutes to fill out.

Anywho. Goodie’s 6 year anniversary was a solid time.  I was sad I missed seeing Sean Thomas (of Rizumu) DJ but I am but a baby grandma who needed her sleep. I can’t wait for the Goodie. See you there!

B2B Vacation Beach 006//TFNJ w/ Brian Creswell, Sarahcuda, Decosoul

You have to go to Vacation Beach. Held monthly at Ortlieb’s, resident DJ’s Teknacolor NinjaWolf Dem, and KT Caustic create an apocalyptic tropicgoth, vacationwave soundscape that’s 100% interactive. It’s not your typical party which is exactly what Philly nightlife needs right now.

22894492_940355592794_474379315942375247_n

Vacation Beach 006

The first hour of Vacation Beach featured a dope dance clinic with Philly Beat Rockers. Party fellows got a free dance lesson via Dr. Moose and B-Boy Spit. Fresh and entertaining and created a very easy going environment. There were interactive visuals which is one of the neatest things I have ever seen at a nightlife event. Curated by Justin Evans, the visuals, added tardigrade, raccoons and other creatures heads to your body if you were on the dancefloor. Some of my friends got up close to the projection and got wild with it. It was a fun and clever way to loosen up the crowd.

Musically, Vacation Beach was a breath of fresh air for me. I love me some dark goth techno, but I think we can all appreciate that booty shaking beats and jungle sounds are what we really need. Each DJ worked seamlessly with one another. Teknacolor DJ is a force on her own. She also served as an MC for the night which I loved as well. Wolf Dem and KT Caustic equally blew my mind. The community feeling of Vacation beach is special. It’s not a vibe of the DJ playing the music, and you are the spectator. It felt like we all had roles in putting this party together. HIGHLY recommended party, and very LGBTQ friendly. The primary crew is mostly non-cis men. A diverse crew like that is a wonderful way to elevate non-cis male voices in the nightlife scene. We all have a place here.

TFNJ w. Brian Creswell, Sarahcuda, Decosoul

Yooooo. It has been a very long time since I went to That Friday Night Jawn by the LEFT RITE crew and this party was huge. Unfortunately, I missed out on Sarahcuda (one of my favorite Philly female DJ’s) and Decosoul but luckily I caught Brian Creswell’s insane set. Heavy banging techno with a darker vibe was his M.O. and the whole room danced so hard. TFNJ is upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie. I got there around 12:30 and it was packed. The happiest moment for me was seeing literally almost all of my techno/house friends. Feels like I can’t say it enough that the sound investment Left Rite has made shows a high amount of professionalism and true love for the nightlife. They are playing a crucial role in this community and cultivate an all-inclusive and drama-free party. If you haven’t checked out a Left Rite party yet, put it on the top of yr bucket list.

Going to two amazing events on Friday was worth my Saturday exhaustion. I decided to take November off from drinking for a few reasons. I’m going to write a post on that in a bit. So far it hasn’t been the worst, though it has been interesting.

The Shakedown: Residents

The Shakedown is a monthly event held by Worship Recordings, a label dedicated to that beautiful deep house, techno, etc. It’s an event held at The Barbary that takes up both floors. It’s very special.

19894846_1472432879479671_4628062568631883631_nThe Shakedown: Residents

As much of a gothic as I am these days, techno and all of its relatives was my first love. While some may say the goth scene is dying, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Philly techno and house events. The thing of it is, The Shakedown, and lots of other events like Rizumu, Left Rite events, etc. are more than just a fun club thing. These crews bring the element of dedicated techno heads, who know the music and the history of this kind of music. This also resonates with the type of crowd that comes in. I admittedly was a bit nervous going to The Barbary because there have been times where the crowd that comes in has ranged from gross to scary. The Shakedown attendees were respectful of each other and came to just dance.

Willyum started the night off with deep house. It felt like a nice nod to the Deep House night that used to be held at The Barbary and I feel so old because I don’t even remember the name of that event. Next up was Rob Paine. It was really a pleasure getting to meet him and chat with him for a moment. His set was refreshing, and it was nearly impossible NOT to dance. I didn’t catch too much of Chris B’s set, but the portion I heard was dope. I had never heard of Big Jawn before this night but wow his set was extremely proper. He is definitely one of my favorite resident Shakedown DJ’s now.

As our world seemingly becomes more harrowing each day, it is extremely important that we have safe spaces for music, entertainment, and love. Places where anyone can come to dance. I don’t believe it’s ever the location that makes the difference of whether a place is safe, but the type of vibe that party crews create. The Shakedown has the right vibe.
