Cold Cave / Black Marble / Choir Boy

I stumbled across Black Marble’s music about a year ago through a friend of mine. “Iron Lung” was the song that got me obsessed. The opening bass and guitar lines is reminiscent of my high school summers driving around with the one friend who had a car.  Every one of the acts at this show was off the charts good. While all in the same genre ballpark, each act brought something that made them stand out on their own.

Cold Cave / Black Marble / Choir Boy

My partner and I arrived during the opening acts set. I never heard of Choir Boy before this show, but the dreamlike goth surf sounds had me instantly hooked. What was interesting was to find that they hail from Utah, as I was convinced they were a UK band at first. The vocals were beautiful and churchy, the name “Choir Boy” is not a gimmick.

Black Marble was up next and played an amazing set. Currently, they only have two albums out and I am really looking forward to more music from them. What I liked about them is you can tell they are dedicated musicians, and not just in a band for the sake of it- as you see sometimes with newer gothy acts I’ve found. They ended the set with “Iron Lung” which I thought was a brilliant move.

I was really blown out of the water by Cold Cave. While I’m familiar with there more bouncy electronic tracks but I had no idea how goth rock their sound was. They sounded like a contemporary Sisters of Mercy but with more synths. The visuals were really well done and interesting as well. Sometimes I find visuals can be a little distracting, but the visuals here were in subdued black and whites and melded perfectly into the band’s style.

Surprisingly the show was not crazy packed. That was a blessing in a way as it created a nice and spacious environment, ideal if you’re an anxiety nugget. Being able to walk around with more room was a nice change of pace from crowed sold-out shows. There still was a lot of people, but a lot of things were going on that night and I know Black Marble played not too long ago (I believe as headliners). That may have been the contribution to a not packed house. I don’t go to nearly as many concerts as I would like too and this was a special one I was glad I was able to attend.

Transmission – a Dark Danse Party

The Barbary is a club that has been standing the test of time so far in the Philly club circuit. Us nightlife people are painfully aware of the influx and outflux of available spaces for parties. Like Kung Fu Necktie, the two-party a night business model works well when it comes to bringing in a crowd.

The staff at The Barbary are some of the nicest and socially aware people. They manage an interesting monthly itinerary of functions and the sound system is well built. Overall the  space is what I consider to be safe and inclusionary.

These wonderful elements aside, I just can’t seem to get into Transmission.

Transmission – a Dark Danse Party

Long gone is the heyday of goth events in the city. Unfortunately, I was too young to experience the lore of a party happening almost every night of the week. Economic and environmental times have changed, and I wonder if a goth party a night would even be sustainable in Philly these days.

This isn’t to say there is a dry spell. We have Spellbound (back from hiatus in August), Uknown Pleasures, A Black Celebration, and a ton of quality shows happening at Lacquer. Transmission is easily one of the most frequently attended. It’s also an important event in the scene. The crowd tends to be a mixed bag of familiar eyelined faces and goth tourists. Sure, creeps definitely can rear their ugly heads here, but the staff at The Barbary have a no-nonsense policy for that behavior. Recently a friend told me of getting someone kicked out for saying transphobic things about someone who works there. I’ve never felt unsafe at a party here.

Transmission is also a great party to bring your non-counterculture friends and expose them to music they may not have been aware of before. However, this is where I hit a wall with how much fun I have. While I’ve never had a bad time, It seems lately that every time I come the exact same songs are played by the same handful of artists. It makes sense to play classics of course, and New Orders Blue Monday will never get old for me. However, there are a lot of classic and danceable tracks that aren’t featured, let alone contemporary goth. A few years this wasn’t the case at Transmission. You could hear songs by TRST being played or lesser known songs from The Cure. The DJ’s are very talented in technique as well, so I’m unsure why the variety of tracks has waned.

The quality of music is my first in personal preferences for what I look for at an event and I haven’t been impressed lately here. However, Transmission is never gonna be a bad choice for a fun outing and is a safe choice if you’re not sure what else is going on that night.

The police are not making “Kensington great again”

America has a plethora of problems.

Healthcare is in crisis, education is teetering, and we are beginning to experience that late-stage capitalism. Not all of us see eye to eye on everything, but a lot of people find camaraderie when police corruption is discussed. The recent incident here in Philly of the racist Starbucks manager calling the cops on two black men was not surprising to anyone. Cops killing unarmed people of color, children even, is tragically unsurprising.  Nor is it a shock to hear of cops victim blaming sexual assault victims. The incident I am about to relay is absolutely not as dire as systemic racism and innocent deaths that happen so frequently by the hands of cops. It is, however, a story that needs to be told.

Dark Tower V3: Ooh Baby I Like It Raw! was a party bearing many amazing facets. There were multiple rooms and floors with different genres of music and handcrafted decor. A coat check was available, and water and soda were being sold on the cheap. This was a BYOB event and the organizers involved created a safe and inclusive atmosphere.  DanceSafe, a crucial organization in the nightlife, was present upstairs. Dark Tower had something for everyone and was an event that brought the community together in a truly positive way.

My friends and I got there after 11, maybe closer to 12. We checked out The Jungle with Camp Phuck It and Techno Basement presented by Labyrinth. At one point I went upstairs and saw my friend walk outside with a stern look on his face. I walked back down the basement and told my friend what I saw. Moments later, the lights were on and we were told the party was shut down. Unfortunately, parties getting shut down by the police is nothing new, neither is how the police acted, which was not ideal from what I personally experienced.

One white and blond policewoman was particularly aggressive. It’s no surprise that she acted with a toxic masculine attitude. In an industry where police act with cowboy machismo, women officers have to act like that to gain even an iota of respect from their male co-workers. She made it difficult for people to grab their coats and literally was making fun of people like we were in high school. She was overheard saying “did any of you people look in the mirror before you left the house today?” and said to someone “your shirt is on backward, haha just kidding.”  The organizers told the police that they were not selling liquor and therefore did not have a liquor license. The police said that since they “saw beer being brought in”, they could come in. I am unsure if this was within their rights.

As if people already have so many valid reasons to fear and not respect the police (a true shame because they could serve a great need in this country), adding on bullying and unkind words are just a few more drops into the overflowing pail of police brutality and crookedness.  As the cops drove away that night, one of them was heard chanting “make Kensington great again” over the police car loudspeaker.

While I personally find that harrowing, I was informed that the police worked well with the event organizers. That is hopeful.

If you’re interested in laws, policies, and other issues regarding nightlife check out 24HrPhl. We are a collective working together towards creating the best community that we can.

The Soft Moon / Boy Harsher at Johnny Brenda’s

Boy Harsher has become one of my favorite new dark electronic groups. I was so stoked to see they were coming to Philadelphia and, unusual for myself, I bought tickets in advance. Good thing I did since the show sold out.

The Soft Moon / Boy Harsher at Johnny Brenda’s

I like Johnny Brenda’s as a show venue, mostly for the booking they do. The space may be a bit small and the sound can seem muffled, but I’ve seen many of my favorite artists here. The spot holds some major nostalgia for me.

Boy Harsher started their set promptly and they absolutely slaaayed. They began with “Underwater“, my second favorite song of theirs and continued on with all the best ones, including “Modulations“. Unfortunately, it felt like their set was much too short. However, as a frequent opener myself, I know how it goes.

When The Soft Moon took the stage, the audience became absolutely mesmerized. They are one of those bands that I have heard about a lot, but haven’t really ‘heard’ before.  Their overall sound was a dreamy nod to Depeche Mode.

My favorite part of the night was seeing so many of my wonderful friends. Late stage capitalism combined with mercury being in retrograde has made life a little tough right now. It’s nice to be part of a community of people who are genuinely sweet and look out for one another. It was really special to see my friends Casey and Michelle. Casey has been battling pancreatic cancer for a bit now. He and his wife Michelle have been fighting it with grace and unfaltering strength. If you can, please donate to their GoFund Me. Thank you!

Next Up: Underworld / Our Annual Cure Night / Free Event

Wonderlust w/ Mr. Falcon, Aziz, and The Wonder Bars (DJ Set)

Sociable Witch I may be, but it’s not often I find myself going out on a weeknight. However, I had to make an exception for this event. The Wonder Bars have a special place in my heart, as does Mr. Falcon. Transparency is key and I am happy to say I have been good friends with The Wonder Bars frontman, Tom Scott since high school (we old). Bird duo, Mr. Falcon, are my close friends too. Pro-Tip, they aren’t actually twins.

Wonderlust w/ Mr. Falcon, Aziz, and The Wonder Bars (DJ Set)

The Liaison Room at Front Street Cafe has become another favorite spot of mine. Location aside, it feels like a safe venue to attend. I got there just as Mr. Falcon went on, so I missed the first set from Aziz. The energy was high and vibes were good, and DJ’s play a major role in creating that kind of environment, ayy.

Mr. Falcon is always a treat to see. The music they play consistently stays with there sound, but you’re bound to hear new and interesting choices when they are on. Though they are passionate about the art of DJing and often play big gigs, they remain without ego. It’s refreshing to go out and see DJ’s who are excellent at the craft, but at with a genuine love of music and not strictly business.

This time The Wonder Bars were DJing, but even DJing is a performance. Some of the band members added live electronics on top of the set. This created a unique and versatile sound to an already choice set.

Every time they perform, whether as a live band or live performance, it’s always so much fun. In fact, the entire night was perfect. So perfect that I stayed out on a school night until 2 a.m. Worth it tho.

Next Up: The Soft Moon / Boy Harsher at Johnny Brenda’s
